Vienna, Austria. Katharina Schützenhöfer and Lena Plesiutschnig are the only Austrians who can continue to fight for medals after the group matches on Wednesday in the elimination round of the Women’s A1 CEV Beach Volleyball European Championships Vienna 2021 presented by Swatch.
The top seeded Austrian team had a good start to the day and defeated the Czechs Michala Kvapilová and Martina Williams in three sets (21-18, 19-21, 15-12), but then lost to the Ukrainian twins Inna and Iryna Makhno in another Game of three (17-21, 21-17, 15-13) in the Red Bull Beach Arena. They finished the tournament in second place in Pool H and will compete in the round of 16 alongside 15 other teams on Friday.
“Fortunately, we won the most important game of the day and qualified for tomorrow,” said Plesiutsching. “But to lose 15:13 in front of our fans in the decisive set is tough. The atmosphere was incredible and it was great to play in front of this crowd. We’ll analyze the game, fix our mistakes and come back stronger tomorrow.”
