Ankara, Turkey. Halkbank ANKARA secured on Friday their spot in the 8th Finals of the men’s CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup 2021 after claiming their second victory in as many matches with Israel’s Hapoel KFAR SABA. Earlier this week, Halkbank had celebrated a 3-1 victory and on Friday afternoon, the hosts needed three close sets (29-27, 25-23, 26-24) to extend their winning streak in the competition to four matches in a row. Their next opponent will be Sport LISBOA e Benfica of Portugal, who did not contest the 16th Finals at all after the withdrawal of Hungary’s VRCK KAZINCBARCIKA.
As per the restrictions in place to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus, no spectators could watch the match from the stands of Baskent Volleyball Hall, even though media could attend the game and interview the players in compliance with strict hygiene measures. Sebastian Devash of Hapoel KFAR SABA top scored in the match with 18 points, as home star Alexander Berger recorded the fastest service of the day, registering a speed of 118 km/h.
“I am very happy with this second victory,” said Halkbank team captain and middle blocker Faik Samed Günes. “We expected this result and to qualify for the next stage of the competition. However, this is only the beginning. As my teammates said after the first match, our goal is to make it all the way to the final. It is our habit to think that way. We want to represent Turkish Volleyball in the best way possible and we will fight all the way until the end.”
