Ried im Innkreis, Austria. UVC Weberzeile RIED of Austria suffered a clear loss at the hands of Bulgaria’s Marek Union Ivkoni DUPNITSA on Saturday in the first of two matches scheduled for the Round of 16 of the CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup 2021. The Bulgarian top club stormed to a comprehensive 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-16) victory at Messehalle 18 and thus holds all the trumps in hand for the return match, which will be taking place on Sunday, starting at 6 pm.
“We wanted to challenge our opponents to the full and invested a lot in the first set. Unfortunately, in the end, this eventually went the way of the Bulgarians. After that, the visitors had more and more self-confidence and dominated in all areas. Congratulations to them”, summarised his feelings the head coach of the home side, Dominik Kefer.
Top scorers were Niklas Stooss (12) and Markus Berger (22) for the home team – Svetoslav Ivanov (17) and Dimitar Dulchev (9) for DUPNITSA. Dulchev played for Austrian team VBC TLC Weiz two years ago. The home side made a lot more own mistakes (29 vs 12) than those recorded by their opponents. In terms of aces, RIED were just slightly ahead (7 vs 6), with DUPNITSA holding a small edge in winning blocks (7 vs 6). The Bulgarians scored five points more (33 vs 28).
