Vienna, Austria. The preliminary round of the HYPO NOE Beach Volleyball Champions Cup is over. At the third stop, the favourites lived up to the expectations when actions resumed on Sunday in the MaXX Sports Centre in Vienna. The top seeded sisters Nadine Strauss / Teresa Strauss and Robin Seidl / Philipp Waller secured the tournament victory. All intermediate round participants (8 women’s and 8 men’s teams) have now been determined.
The competition continues next weekend – for the first time since the coronavirus-related lockdown with fans in attendance. The Mur-Beach in Graz will host Saturday’s matches, with the spusuSPORTinsel opening its doors to Beach Volleyball on Sunday in Vienna, where the final tournament will also take place on July 11. The ‘Location Draft’ for the two intermediate round tournaments will run live on the official Facebook page of the Austrian Volleyball Association from 7 pm on Monday evening.
The Strauss twins were in a class of their own in Vienna, celebrating three victories without losing a set. “We are happy to have won all the games, but also very exhausted today due to the heat. We are already looking forward to the coming weekend,” said Nadine.
Dorina Klinger and her interim partner from Norway, Oda Ulveseth, finished second. Michaela Hollaus / Julia Mitter made it into the next round as well, doing so as the second best third-placed team across all groups.
For the men’s competition, Clemens Doppler / Alexander Horst and Robin Seidl / Philipp Waller claimed their first two games. Seidl / Waller had the upper hand in the final showdown for the tournament victory, beating the silver medallists from the 2017 World Championship in two sets. “It was brutally hot, especially the break between the first and second game was very short. Luckily we had a longer break and were able to mobilise all our strength again. You are always particularly motivated when playing against two such legends,” said Waller after the match against Doppler / Horst.
The duel for the last intermediate round ticket was dramatic. This was secured by Simon Frühbauer / Michael Murauer through a hard-fought three-set victory over Jakob Reiter / Johannes Kratz.
