The sun, the sea, and elite-level beach volleyball: Bibinje, Croatia, will serve as the perfect host for the MEVZA Beach Volleyball Championship 2025, scheduled from June 11 to 15, bringing together the region’s top teams in a setting that promises both high-stakes competition and a celebration of sport.
This year’s edition is powered by HEP (Hrvatska elektroprivreda), the championship’s main sponsor and a proud driving force behind Croatian sports. For more than a decade, HEP has stood shoulder to shoulder with national teams, athletes, and federations and their energy is now fueling the excitement in Bibinje.
We had the chance to sit down with Josip Pribanic, a Croatian beach volleyball athlete and coach, who is preparing for the championship with his partner, Tin Devald. Josip shared his thoughts on competing in Bibinje and the importance of the tournament for Croatian volleyball.

“From an organizational standpoint, I expect a high-quality tournament with the best teams from the region. This will be a great experience for the Croatian teams, and personally, playing with my younger, promising partner Tin, I hope we show the progress we’ve made since last year and that all our hard work will be rewarded in front of a home crowd,” said Josip.
Playing at home brings an added level of excitement and responsibility for Josip. He reflected on his previous experience at the MEVZA event in I?i?i, which was his second year on the sand.
“Now, with more experience, I fully realize the importance of hosting these tournaments to develop Croatian beach volleyball, and I’m looking forward to playing with the sea in the background. There’s no better feeling after a tough match than cooling off in the sea.”
Josip also shared some insights into his pre-match rituals. “Before a match, it’s important for me to be relaxed. I like to chat with people about anything except beach volleyball to clear my head. Our sport is mentally and physically demanding, so I prefer to have a ‘clear head’ before I get focused.”
A signature part of his routine involves greeting the referees and sprinkling sand on his hands before every game. He also has a lucky charm: bracelets from friends, which he wears until they break. “These little things help me stay grounded and focused on what’s important,” he added.

For Josip, beach volleyball is more than just a sport – it’s an opportunity for personal growth and an avenue to experience the world. “Beach volleyball is one of the most exciting sports, especially during the Olympics. It’s physically demanding and also requires strong mental toughness. What’s unique is the dynamic between the two players on the court, requiring not just individual skills but a deep understanding of teamwork and social dynamics.”
Josip also emphasized the broader life lessons the sport provides. “From amateurs to professionals, players are involved in everything – from organizing travel and accommodation to planning training sessions with other teams. You can travel the world through beach volleyball and meet incredible people. It’s a great way to grow both as an athlete and as an individual.”
With the tournament quickly approaching, Josip has a message for the fans: “Come out and actively cheer for the players, and feel the electric atmosphere of the beach volleyball tournament. The fans’ energy plays a huge role in motivating the teams, especially the young, promising Croatian players. And we’ll make sure to reward that support with exciting and dynamic play!”

HEP, a company that energizes Croatia, continues to shine a light on Croatian sports. “HEP’s energy powers Croatia, and the Beachvolleyball Championship in Bibinje shows that Croatian sand is the true playing ground for champions!” Josip concludes.
As we prepare for the MEVZA Beachvolleyball Championship, we can look forward to thrilling matches, spectacular athleticism, and the undeniable energy that HEP continues to fuel across the country. This year’s event is sure to leave an impression on athletes and fans alike, showcasing the heart and passion of Croatian beach volleyball.
