Vienna, Austria. The captain of the Austrian men’s national team, Peter Wohlfahrtstätter (see picture, #4), will continue to play for Benfica LISBOA. The 31-year-old, 203 cm tall middle blocker from Wörgl has extended his contract with the top Portuguese club for another season.
“Benfica and I continue to complement each other very well. Therefore, it was an easy decision for both parties to continue this cooperation. However, the club has had to make financial cuts due to the corona crisis, so we will not play Champions League in the coming season. However, it looks like Benfica is aiming to participate in the CEV Challenge Cup,” explains Wohlfahrtstätter.
The Tyrolean switched to the ‘Eagles’ in 2018 after securing the French Cup title with Tourcoing LILLE Métropole a few months earlier. With Benfica, things went smoothly right away, since in 2019 Wohlfahrtstätter claimed a clean sweep of all three domestic competitions before playing in the group stage of the CEV Champions League last season.
After completion of 24 rounds in the national championship, Benfica were unbeaten on top of the charts, after previously retaining the Supercup crown in October, before the season ended abruptly due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
