Rookies OK Mladost Brcko started their first MEVZA Cup campaign with a hard-fought 3-2 (20-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-21, 15-13) home win over last season’s runners-up SK Zadruga Aich/Dob on Friday evening. Jovan Delic for Brcko was the best scorer of the match, with a total of 20 points to his name. Aich/Dob’s Victor Alcantara kept close with 19 points.
„The enthusiastic home crowd accounted for an awesome atmosphere. It was a tough fight. Unfortunately, we gave away a 2-1 sets lead. The hosts are a very strong team, which is particiating in this year’s Champions League edition as well. Our players still need some more time to find the right chemistry“, Aich/Dob’s Sports Director Martin Micheu explained.
Croatia’s national champions HAOK Mladost Zagreb celebrated a stunning sweep (25-22, 25-21, 25-19) at Union Raiffeisen Waldviertel. Lukasz Szarek top scored for the hosts with 18 points, while Tymofii Poluian recorded 15 points for the away team.
Zagreb and Aich/Dob top the charts on four points. Calcit Volley Kamnik follows in third place. The Slovenian side will get a chance to clinch the top spot on upcoming Wednesday, when they lock horns with OK Maribor in a Slovenian derby.
