Women’s MEVZA League – Final Four teams ready for showdown in Vienna

The women’s MEVZA League 2021-2022 will reach its climax on Wednesday and Thursday with the highly anticipated Final Four tournament. Teams from Slovenia, Hungary and Austria will be competing for the medals at the Posthalle in Vienna. The unbeaten regular season winners OK Calcit KAMNIK are somehow the natural favourites. The Slovenian champions will be facing the challenge of hosts VB NÖ Sokol/Post SCHWECHAT in the second semi-final. Vasas Óbuda BUDAPEST and Nova KBM Branik MARIBOR will be locking horns in the opener earlier on Wednesday.

OK Calcit KAMNIK seized the MEVZA League crown for the third time in 2020. Last season the women’s competition took a year off due to the coronavirus pandemic. Therefore, KAMNIK are still the defending champions. Sokol/Post go into Wednesday night’s semi-final (7 pm) as the clear underdogs. Zuzana Pecha-Tlstovicova’s players, however, were able to build up self-confidence last weekend, when they emerged victorious twice from their encounters with OK Marina KASTELA. Sokol/Post’s head coach is aware of her team’s role as outsiders and sees another opportunity for her players to gain experience. “But of course, we also want to present ourselves well and maybe we can even surprise our opponents,” Pecha-Tlstovicova explains.

Nova KBM Branik MARIBOR can look back on a very successful MEVZA League history. The Slovenian side won the title four times between 2010 and 2015. Two years ago, MARIBOR had to accept a bitter defeat at the hands of KAMNIK in the gold medal match after leading 2-0. In the opening fixture of the Final Four tournament (4:30 pm), they will be facing Vasas Óbuda BUDAPEST that ended the main phase in second place, comfortably six points ahead of MARIBOR. In this season’s head-to-heads, the team from Hungary’s capital city leads the way 2-0.

The bronze medal match follows on Thursday at 10:30 am, while the grand finale will start at 1 pm. After that, we will know which team will get its hands on the prestigious trophy in the 2021-2022 edition of the women’s MEVZA League.
