On Saturday evening, defending champions ACH Volley LJUBLJANA started their MEVZA League campaign with a strong performance against OK Calcit KAMNIK. The “Orange Dragons” came from one set down to celebrate a 3-1 (20-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-22) home win over their national rivals. Nikola Gjorgiev and Alen Sket top scored for ACH Volley LJUBLJANA with 19 and 17 points, respectively. Miha Bregar (19) and Martin Kosmina (17) were OK Calcit KAMNIK’s top scorers.
ACH Volley Ljubljana coach Mladen Kasic: “In the first set, the opponent had an excellent block and reception, which was a result of our not strong enough serves. We started to serve better in the second half of the match, which was the key to today’s success. I have to admit that I was positively surprised by Kamnik’s play in the absence of their opposite hitter Gasparini.”
In the women’s competition Mladost ZAGREB secured three points with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 29-27) victory over OK Marina KASTELA in a Croatian derby. ZAGREB’s Dinka Kulic was the player of the match after an impressive performance that saw her finishing on a total of 21 points, her team mate Martina Samadan scored 15 points. On the away side, Nika Stanovic and Tea Kojundzic split the best scorer’s honours with 12 points each.

Mladost ZAGREB top scorer Dinka Kulic: “First and foremost, it is very positive that we won today, because Marina KASTELA is also our toughest competitor in the Croatian championship. I hope it continues this way.”
The MEVZA Leagues are going to resume with two more derbies on Sunday. Austria’s national champions UVC Holding GRAZ will be hosting SK Zadruga AICH/DOB, Calcit Volley KAMNIK will be facing Nova KBM Branik MARIBOR.
