On Sunday evening, Calcit Volley KAMNIK (SLO) celebrated their fourth MEVZA League victory this season. Gregor Jeroncic’s team needed 107 minutes to overcome last season’s bronze medallists and hosts Union Raiffeisen WALDVIERTEL (AUT) in five sets (18-25, 25-13, 23-25, 25-20, 15-6). In the first encounter featuring these two teams contested at Kamnik only four days ago, the ‘Nordmänner’ were able to edge Calcit Volley in a tiebreaker.

Mitja Gasparini and Martin Kosmina top scored for the winning team with 26 and 21 points, respectively. Union Raiffeisen WALDVIERTEL’s Koendert Daan Streutker managed to put 20 points to his name, while his teammate Marek Sulc scored 14 times. Calcit Volley was clearly better in attack (53% vs 37%) and at blocking (14 vs 10). On top of that, the Slovenians hit four aces more than their opponents did (7 vs 3).
As a result, Calcit Volley moved up to fourth place in the current standing on 10 points, just one in front of URW. Both teams have contested seven MEVZA League matches this season so far. Only a few days ago, the MEVZA Executive Committee announced that Union Raiffeisen WALDVIERTEL would be hosting the Final Four tournament for the second consecutive season. Therefore, the 2020-2021 edition of the MEVZA League will be reaching its climax on February 27 and 28 at the Stadthalle Zwettl.
