The MEVZA League continued on Friday with a Slovenian derby. OK Calcit Volley KAMNIK celebrated a hard-fought 3-2 (22-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-19, 15-12) home win over OK Merkur MARIBOR. As a result, the hosts drew level with fourth-placed Union Raiffeisen WALDVIERTEL. Both teams have secured eight points in the six matches they have contested so far. OK Merkur MARIBOR, on the other hand, closed the gap to defending champions and competition leaders ACH Volley LJUBLJANA to one point.

For Calcit Volley KAMNIK it was the second tiebreaker within three days. On Wednesday, they suffered a disappointing loss at the hands of Final Four tournament hosts Union Raiffeisen WALDVIERTEL. This time, however, Calcit Volley captain Mitja Gasparini and his teammates emerged victorious from another tough duel.

Gasparini was the player of the evening after delivering an impressive performance that saw him finishing on 27 points. Ahmed Ikhbayri from the away side was the only one to keep close with 23. Calcit Volley’s Saso Stalekar managed to put 15 to his name, while Merkur MARIBOR’s Rok Mozic scored 17 times. The winning side was clearly better in attack (48% vs 41%) and at blocking (15 vs 11). Merkur MARIBOR scored nine aces, while Calcit Volley KAMNIK hit seven.
