On Wednesday evening, OK Merkur MARIBOR (SLO) emerged victorious from their MEVZA League clash with UVC Holding GRAZ (AUT). The current table leaders celebrated a 3-1 (25-22, 25-18, 21-25, 25-17) win over the competition rookies on home soil. As a result, OK Merkur MARIBOR extended their winning streak to five matches in a row to cement their leadership in the competition. UVC Holding GRAZ, on the other hand, have not been able to collect a single point from the five matches they have contested so far.

“The most important things are that we were able to win the game and that we secured another three points for the standing. With this victory we also came close to our basic goal of qualifying on the Final Four tournament. UVC Holding GRAZ made a very good job in the defence. However, although we were not at our best today, we managed to win,” MARIBOR’s head coach Sebastijan Skorc said.
Ahmed Ikhbayri (LBA) and Rok Mozic (SLO) top scored for the hosts with 18 and 14 points, respectively. For the away team Tiago Pereira (POR) managed to put 18 to his name, while Johannes Kratz (AUT) scored 14 times. Match stats: spikes 57 vs 45, aces 3 vs 5, winning blocks 6 vs 2 and opponent errors 30 vs 30. The coaching staff of UVC Holding GRAZ could not count on a full roster due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2020-2021 edition of the MEVZA League is going to continue on Saturday with two very exciting national derbies. OK Calcit KAMNIK (SLO) will host defending champions ACH Volley LJUBLJANA (SLO), while Union Raiffeisen WALDVIERTEL (AUT) will battle with SK Zadruga AICH/DOB (AUT) for the third place in the current standing.
