The 2020-2021 edition of the MEVZA League will resume with two matchups later this week. On Friday, OK Merkur MARIBOR (SLO), the closest pursuers of titleholders and current table leaders ACH Volley LJUBLJANA (SLO), will host SK Zadruga AICH/DOB (AUT). Rookies and bottom of the table UVC Holding GRAZ (AUT) are going to lock horns with OK Calcit KAMNIK (SLO) on Sunday.
OK Merkur MARIBOR have a 3-2 win-loss record this far, while SK Zadruga AICH/DOB have secured three points out of three matches up until now. The Austrians signed Brazilian opposite Daniel de Souza Maciel earlier this month. “I think he will help us to get back on track. Daniel has already proven his class at several top clubs,” SK Zadruga AICH/DOB sports director Martin Micheu explains.
Second-placed OK Merkur MARIBOR have had to cope with a three-week break due to the coronavirus pandemic. “We used the time to train hard and to prepare for the challenges that lie ahead. At Mladost ZAGREB three weeks ago, we delivered our best performance this season and celebrated our seventh win in a row. SK Zadruga AICH/DOB managed to make up a team of high quality once again, but we know what we have to do on Friday,” head coach Sebastijan Skorc is looking forward to the clash with Austria’s heavyweight.
Rookies UVC Holding GRAZ have not been able to collect a single point from the four matches they have contested so far. On Sunday, they are the underdogs once again. However, they aim to secure the very first points in their maiden season in the MEVZA League.
