Calcit Volley lock horns with OK Maribor in Slovenian derby

Calcit Volley Kamnik will get a chance to clinch the MEVZA League top spot this coming Wednesday, when they host rookies OK Maribor in a Slovenian derby. Mladost Zagreb and SK Zadruga Aich/Dob currently top the charts of the men’s competition on four points each.

Calcit Volley upset reigning MEVZA League champions and their biggest national rivals ACH Volley Ljubljana in straight sets in the season opener, while Maribor suffered a 1-3 home defeat at the hands of ACH Volley in their MEVZA League debut mach.

“There is certainly a difficult game ahead of us. Maribor has a quality, young team, as they proved against ACH Volley. With some luck, they could have even won that game. The goal is to make as little mistakes as possible. We are eager to win the first season match in front of our fan. I believe the home crowd will help us,” Calcit Volley’s Jan Brulec invites the people of Kamnik to attend this Wednesday’s match. The setter returned to Calcit Volley for the second time after leaving ACH Volley.

Compared to the previous season, OK Maribor didn’t change their line-up much. Simon Krizman and Ziga Mori left, returnee Miha Sijanec, opposite Aljosa Bogozalec and talented Rok Bracko joined the team. Sebastjan Skorc, assistant to Alberto Giuliani on the Slovenian bench at the recent Eurovolley, remains the head coach.

“With Bogozalec joining Jernej Detela, OK Maribor will be even more dangerous. The key to win this game is to stop their two opposites, along with Rok Mozic and Ziga Donik. We will really have to be at our best, but we are motivated to keep the three points at home,” Kamnik’s captain Brulec predicted.

Brcko challenge Zagreb, Kastela meet ACH Volley

Mladost Zagreb will be facing Mladost Brcko on Friday. Croatia’s national champions slumped to a 2-3 loss at home ground against Mladost Ribola Kastela in the first round but in the previous week, they celebrated a stunning sweep at Union Raiffeisen Waldviertel. Newcomers Brcko, Bosnia’s top team and Champions League participants as well, started their first MEVZA League campaign with a hard-fought home win over last season’s runners-up SK Zadruga Aich/Dob.

The third MEVZA League men’s match this week is going to take place at the Gradska hall in Kastela. Mladost Ribola will welcome ACH Volley. Both sides have recorded one victory so far.
