Day two of the inaugural MEVZA Senior Championship brought another exciting evening of volleyball in Maribor and Fonyód, with several matches going the distance and teams continuing their battle in the round-robin competition.
In the women’s tournament in Maribor, Austria opened the day with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Luxembourg. After Luxembourg claimed the opening set 25-23, Austria responded immediately by taking the second 25-23. The third set turned into a real battle, with Luxembourg edging it 26-24 to move one set away from victory. Austria, however, stayed composed in the key moments, taking the fourth set 25-23 before dominating the deciding tie-break 15-5.
Croatia continued its strong start to the tournament later in the evening with a confident 3-0 victory over Cyprus. Croatia controlled the match from start to finish, winning 25-20, 25-17 and 25-17 to remain unbeaten after two matches.
In the men’s competition in Fonyód, Austria also celebrated a five-set victory, overcoming Luxembourg 3-2 in one of the most dramatic matches of the tournament so far. The opening set alone delivered an incredible 34-32 scoreline in Austria’s favour before Luxembourg fought back to level the match. Austria eventually secured the win in the fifth set, 15-13.
Hungary then closed the day with a 3-1 victory over Cyprus. The hosts won the opening two sets 25-22 and 25-21, Cyprus answered with a 25-23 third-set win, but Hungary regained control in the fourth set and finished the match with a 25-18 set victory.
