On Thursday evening, Union Raiffeisen WALDVIERTEL cruised to their third MEVZA League victory in a row, celebrating a clean sweep (25-20, 25-23, 26-24) at bottom of the table VKP BRATISLAVA. Already on Wednesday the “Nordmänner” had emerged victorious from their clash with TJ Spartak MYJAVA in the tie-breaker.
Therefore, they moved up to third place in the current standing with a 6-4 win-loss record now two points in front of their compatriots and Final Four tournament hosts SK Zadruga AICH/DOB (5-4). URW’s Marek Sulc was the most prolific player, scoring 19 points, while VKP BRATISLAVA’s Daouda Yacoubou managed to put 14 to his name.
Zdenek Smejkal, head coach Union Raiffeisen WALDVIERTEL: “Both teams did not perform at high level today. Our match schedule is very tough, so it is no surprise to me that my players are somehow lacking physical and mental strength. All the more we are very happy that we were able to pick up five points from the two matches in Slovakia.
Matus Kalny, head coach of VKP BRATISLAVA: “We have improved our performance after losing the first set. But we were not able to finish the second and third set successfully. We make a lot of own faults – that was essential tonight.”
The men’s MEVZA League will continue on January 3, when second-placed OK MERKUR MARIBOR will be facing Union Raiffeisen WALDVIERTEL. The women’s competition is going to resume on January 6 with the match-up between Final Four tournament hosts VB NÖ SOKOL/POST and Nova KBM Branik MARIBOR.
