Many of you may still remember the touching story of Monika Simkova, a Slovak Volleyball player for the University of Buffalo in the USA and sister of Slovakia’s Volleyball star Peter Michalovic.

Five months ago, because of an aggressive, life threatening bacterial infection, Monika underwent a number of surgeries, eventually resulting in the amputation of both her legs. Some five months later, Monika walked out of the Buffalo General Medical Center to a ‘clap out’ from her care team.
She received a heartfelt send-off as she left the hospital on Tuesday afternoon, with staff and leadership lining the hallways to cheer her on and offer their well wishes as she heads home to continue her recovery.

Monika’s elder sister Lucia, herself a Volleyball and Beach Volleyball player, had started a crowdfunding action under the hashtag #One4Mon, while Peter had returned to Europe after spending some time by the side of her little sister to join Team Slovakia at EuroVolley in Tallinn in a remarkable demonstration of courage and resilience.
With Christmas just around the corner, we can only cherish the latest news from Buffalo and wish Monika all the very best for the next steps of her recovery!
