Vasas Óbuda BUDAPEST extended their winning streak in the women’s MEVZA League to five victories in a row. The Hungarian team celebrated a clean sweep (25-20, 25-16, 25-23) at third-placed HAOK Mladost ZAGREB on Wednesday evening.
Therefore, Vasas Óbuda BUDAPEST are now topping the current standing on 18 points with a 6-1 win-loss record, while Slovenia’s reigning national champions OK Calcit KAMNIK (SLO) are sitting unbeaten in second place (6-0). Yuliya Boyko was the most prolific player for the new table leaders with 15 points, HAOK Mladost ZAGREB’s Josipa Markovic managed to put 10 to her name.
Giannis Athanasopoulos, head coach Vasas Óbuda BUDAPEST: “We played against a very good team, so it was a really tough match. I am very pleased about that victory. In addition, Alexandra Malloy played her last career match, therefore, it was also a very emotional evening for the team.“
Despite the loss HAOK Mladost ZAGREB’s head coach Leonard Baric was not disappointed: “We played very well today and we proved that we can play on a good level. I am also happy, that my players kept fighting till the last ball.”
The MEVZA League is going to continue after a short Christmas break on December 29 with the men’s match TJ Spartak MYJAVA (SVK) vs. Union Raiffeisen WALDVIERTEL (AUT). The women’s competition will resume on January 6, when SVS Post SCHWECHAT (AUT) will be hosting Nova KBM Branik MARIBOR (SLO).
