The fourth day of the MEVZA Senior Championship brought more clear winners in the women’s tournament, while the men’s competition once again delivered a five-set battle ahead of the final day on Sunday.
In women’s competition in Maribor, Hungary opened the day with a confident 3-0 victory over Austria. Although Austria stayed close throughout parts of the match, Hungary controlled the key moments and secured the win with set scores of 25-22, 25-19 and 25-20.
Croatia then continued its unbeaten run in the women’s competition with another straight-sets victory, defeating Luxembourg 25-12, 25-16 and 25-18. Croatia showed control from the very beginning and now heads into the final day with three wins from three matches.
In the men’s tournament in Fonyód, Hungary and Luxembourg played the most dramatic match of the day. Luxembourg started strongly and took the opening set 25-18, but Hungary answered immediately by winning the next two sets 25-16 and 25-18. Luxembourg forced a tie-break after taking the fourth set 25-18, but Hungary held its nerve in the deciding set and closed the match 15-11 for a 3-2 victory.
Later in the evening, Croatia recorded another important win, beating Austria 3-0. Austria pushed Croatia all the way to 25-23 in both the first and third sets, but Croatia remained composed in the important moments and added another victory to stay unbeaten.
The final day of the inaugural MEVZA Senior Championship will take place on Sunday.
