The inaugural edition of the MEVZA Senior Championship came to an end on Sunday with the final matches in Maribor and Fonyód deciding the overall standings in both competitions.
In the women’s tournament, Luxembourg closed its campaign with an exciting 3-2 victory over Cyprus. Luxembourg opened the match with a 25-21 set win before Cyprus answered convincingly in the second set, 25-14. Cyprus then moved in front after taking the third set 25-19, but Luxembourg fought back once again, winning the fourth set 25-22 before dominating the tie-break 15-8.
The final women’s match of the tournament brought a direct battle for first place between Croatia and Hungary. Croatia started strongly and took the opening set 25-19, but Hungary responded by winning the next two sets 25-23 and 25-18. Croatia managed to extend the match after an incredible fourth set, edging Hungary 32-30, but Hungary stayed composed in the deciding set and secured the title with a 15-12 win.
The final standings in the women’s tournament:
In the men’s competition in Fonyód, Cyprus finished the tournament with a convincing 3-0 win over Luxembourg, taking the sets 25-13, 25-16 and 25-19.
Croatia then completed an unbeaten tournament run with another strong performance, defeating Hungary 3-0 in the final match of the championship. Croatia controlled the match from the beginning and secured the victory with set scores of 25-16, 25-23 and 25-19 to officially seal first place.
