Zadruga Aich/Dob extended its run of success on Wednesday, defeating champion Union Raiffeisen Waldviertel in Bleiburg 25:14, 25:21, 27:2 in a match of the MEVZA League Men basic round. It was already the eighth victory of the Carinthian en suite.
In the opening set, two teams were very tied until the Aich reach a five-point advantage. Zadruga reached the lead with 20-11and that margin Dob didn’t allow to let go. They won the set with 11 point difference.
In the second set, Aich kept pace with Union until the result 8-8. With four consecutive points, Waldviertel ran away from their opponents to 4 points difference, but Dob was better team in this set too. They turned over the result and won the second set 25-21.
The third set was tied too, but Waldviertel had s big difference in the begining. They again reached 5 point advantage, but Aich bit by bit caught up opponents and take this set to extra time. Dob won the last two points and the game too.
Setter Nicholas Butler played his first game for Aich/Dob. The Australian had joined the team just a few days ago. “He played from the start, celebrated a top debut after only two training sessions and I think he will help us a lot. In the fight for a top 4 place after the basic round, this was a very important victory,” said Aich/Dob sports director Martin Micheu.
